Yvette Cohen’s "Ara Pacis" series consists of shaped canvases of oil paint and wood dowels that appear sculptural but mount flat on the wall and sometimes the floor. These single pieces, as well as the diptychs and triptychs, are positioned so that the surrounding space is activated, pulling the viewer in. Pieces range in size from about two feet to work that spans the entire wall. The term "Ara Pacis" is loosely translated as an altar to peace. Thus these shapes are temples of sorts that defy our perception. The viewer is drawn in beyond actual physical space to experience openness and freedom.
